Australian Sustainable Built Environment Council (ASBEC)

ASBEC

CIOB Australasia is pleased to announce that they have been accepted on to the Australian Sustainable Built Environment Council. ASBEC is the peak body of key organisations committed to a sustainable built environment in Australia. Council members consist of industry and professional associations, non-government organisations and government observers who are involved in the planning, design, delivery and operation of our built environment, and are concerned with the social and environmental impacts of this sector.

ASBEC provides a forum for diverse groups involved in the built environment to gather, find common ground and intelligently discuss contentious issues.

The CIOB recognises the importance of sustainability. This has grown out of a wider perception that rising populations and economic development are damaging to the earth's resources. The Institute acknowledges that the construction, maintenance and use of buildings impacts substantially on the environment and currently contributes negatively to the world's climate, atmosphere and ecosystem. We also accept that buildings are the largest producers of harmful gases such as CO2 and this 'eco-footprint' will only increase as the world's population continues to rise. The CIOB therefore believes that the construction industry, from design to demolition, has a vital role to play as a solution provider through sustainable development and procurement.

Becoming a member of ASBEC is an important step in our commitment to best practice in the built environment.
