ICE in NZ 2010 AGM and Presentation: Pike River Coal Mine Ventilation Shaft
Continuing the longstanding cooperation between the two Associations, ATS and the ICE are pleased to bring you a follow-up to the hugely successful 2008 presentation on this project. The AGM will be a swift introduction to it.
Presentation by Evan Giles, Principal, URS Ltd
One of the world’s lowest ash coal resources is being mined at the new Pike River Coal Mine some 46km northwest of Greymouth, which should reach full production during 2010. To open the mine, access had to be constructed from the nearest district road some 12km from the new offices of the company.Evan will provide an overview of the project with some emphasis on the rock conditions in the tunnel and in the Pit Bottom. The impact of poorer rock will be demonstrated, and the ventilation shaft will also be covered.
This talk was presented to the NZGeotechnical Society in Christchurch in October 2009, also with support from the ICE.
