CIOB conducted a Site Visit to the Victoria Park Tunnel on Friday 5th August.
The Victoria Park Tunnel is New Zealand’s highest priority state highway upgrade under construction. The $340 million project will remove the last major traffic bottleneck on Auckland’s central motorway network and unlock the potential of other significant investment in recent years to improve travel reliability to and around the Auckland CBD.
The total length of the project is 2.2 kilometres, from the Wellington Street motorway over bridge on State Highway 1 to the Auckland Harbour Bridge. The project involves the construction of a 450m cut and cover tunnel adjacent to the existing Victoria Park Viaduct to provide three northbound lanes. The Viaduct will be reconfigured to carry four southbound lanes. Also, the motorway through St Mary’s Bay will be widened to provide five traffic lanes in each direction and a citybound bus lane.
Work started in late 2009. While the project is due to be completed by mid-2012, it is planned to have the tunnel structure built by the time of the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
The project is being delivered by the Victoria Park Alliance comprising the NZ Transport Agency (owner), Fletcher Construction (builder), Beca (designer), Higgins Contractors (traffic & pavements), Parsons Brinckerhoff (system design).
This visit was a huge success with full house attendance.

The CIOB wishes to thank the Victoria Park Alliance and Fletcher Construction Company for this opportunity.
